This 2 inch wide 17 foot high juniper was 45 years old.  It grew in very dense shade under canopy from both other larger junipers and several Live Oaks.
The soil was average depth and a decent quality but the light was very dim under all the trees.  The tree had almost no branches and was heading for the canopy.
